Welcome to Addo Park Safari Lodges

The Addo Park Safari Lodges are all located in a malaria free region of South Africa.

The Addo Park Safari Lodges and surrounding region in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province include the small town of Addo, the spectacular Addo Elephant National Park itself and the nearby game-rich Amakhala Game Reserve, Kirkwood as well as the malaria-free, big 5 Kwandwe Game Reserve.

Deep within the shadows of the dense valley bushveld of the Sundays River Region of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa lies the famous Addo Elephant Park Safari Lodges.

The original elephant section of the park was proclaimed in 1932 when only eleven elephants remained in this region.

Today, this unique ecosystem in South Africa is a sanctuary to over 455 elephants, Cape buffalo, black rhino, a variety of antelope species, as well as the flightless dung beetle, found almost exclusively in the Addo Park Safari Lodges.

Plans exist to expand the now 165 000-hectare Addo Elephant National Park into a 362 000-hectare national park.

Also, projects include the proposed proclamation of a 125 000-hectare marine reserve that includes islands that are home to the world’s most significant populations of Cape gannets and the second largest breeding population of African penguins (stats via south African safari lodges).

Currently South Africa’s third largest national park covering 1800 square kilometres of bush and beach, the Addo Park Safari Lodges encompasses five of the country’s nine terrestrial biomes and thus a wide variety of vegetation, geology and even weather patterns.

That said, the Addo experience for the vast majority is highly focused on a relatively small section of the park and the area around Addo Main Camp and Colchester.

Gentile game-viewing on well-signed routes make the park easily accessible to self-drive visitors new to the African bush.

  • Binoculars – although the lodge will have a pair or two in your 4×4 safari vehicle.
  • Prescription Medication – Although medical evacuation is possible, you are hours away from any doctors or hospitals, so make sure to stock up.
  • Day Bag/Carry Bag for water, camera, jacket, etc.
